EFRS CT EXPERT

Mahadevappa Mahesh, MS, PhD, is the Professor of Radiology and Cardiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD. He is also the Chief Physicist at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD.

Dr Mahesh is board certified from the American Board of Radiology in diagnostic radiological physics and is a member of the Radiation Control Advisory Board for the State of Maryland. His research interests are in medical imaging, particularly in areas of computed tomography (CT), interventional fluoroscopy and digital mammography.

Dr Mahesh is currently Treasurer for American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), Board Member for the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) and Vice-President of Maryland Radiological Society. Dr Mahesh also serves as subject-matter-expert (SME) to the United Nations-International Atomic Energy Agency (UN-IAEA).

Dr Mahesh is the author of the textbook titled 'MDCT Physics: The Basics – Technology, Image Quality and Radiation Dose'. 
Dr Mahesh is a fellow of the AAPM (2007), ACR (2009), American College of Medical Physics (2011) and Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) (2011).

Evangelia Dimovasili is a radiation physicist working at CERN since 2001. She holds a BSc from the University of Athens, a MSc. in Medical Physics from the University of Crete and a PhD from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology EPFL (Lausanne Switzerland).

Between 2001 and 2004 she worked at the Radiation Protection group of CERN in the framework of her doctoral thesis. Subsequently she joined the TOTEM experiment of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as a post-doctoral CERN fellow with the Penn State University to work on detector radiation hardness and dose monitoring. Between 2008 and 2010 she worked at the Knowledge and Technology Transfer group as the Technical Coordinator of the European project PARTNER on Particle Radiotherapy.

She joined CERN’s group of experts in the field of scintillation crystals in 2011. Since 2014 she is a senior research associate with the University of Cyprus. She is also member of the Safety Group of CERN’s second largest experiment (CMS) with her capacity as a Swiss Certified Radiation Protection expert.

I graduated from Imperial College London wth a degree in Physics. I then obtained an MSc in Radiation Physics and a PhD in Medical Physics. I have had an active career in medical physicsin the UK's National Health Service; particularly in the research of scientific problems in diagnostic radiology and radiation protection, most recently in the development of clinical audit in radiology.

My interest in the public health aspects of ionizing radiations has been maintained through work with various international bodies, including the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiations, International Atomic Energy Agency, World Health Organization, Pan American Organization and the European Commission.

I have also been nominated to committees of the International Electrotechnical Commission in relation to safety standards for mammography equipment, and working parties of the International Commission of Radiological Protection.

Dr. Ioannis Tsougos holds a BSc in Physics and an MSc and PhD in Medical Radiation Physics. He studied in London Metropolitan University (UK), Karolinska Institutet (Sweden), Emory University (USA) and the University of Patras (Greece). Currently, he is an Assistant Professor of Medical Radiation Physics in the Medical School of the University of Thessaly, Larissa, Greece.

He has authored more than 65 research papers and 7 book chapters. He is a member of the EFOMP, ESR, and ESMRMB. His main research interests are Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging techniques and applications, Radiation Biology and Nuclear Medicine

Prof Rehani is currently working as Visiting Professor at the Harvard Medical School, Massacusetts General Hospital and also Adjunt Professor at the Duke University. He was earlier working for 11+ years at the IAEA where he was responsible for initiating and directing projects in more than 70 countries. He led the IAEA catract study to test eyes of staff in cardiac cathterization labs. The current talk will include results from his studies.

Vasilis is a Radiographer in the MRI-CT department of the General Children’s Hospital in Athens. He has obtained his BSc degree in the Radiography Department of the ATEI Institute of Athens. He has specialised in MRI in Karolinska – Huddigne University Hospital of Stockholm, Sweden. He has a Master degree of the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Athens. His thesis was about the effect of Ionizing Radiation in Children and Pregnant women. He is currently a candidate PhD student in the Faculty of Medicine as well. His research interests include optimisation in Paediatric Medical Imaging and Radiation Protection. He is a Lab Assistant in the Faculty of Health and Welfare professions in the Department of Radiographers in the ATEI Institute of Athens. He is teaching MRI and CT for BSc students. He supervises and coordinates the work of several radiographer students in the Medical Imaging field.

Vasilis has participated in scientific matters as a member of the scientific council of the National society of Radiographers.. He has moderated several national and international scientific sessions and delivered a high number of presentations at national and international conferences as well. Currently he has been elected as a member of the Radiographer Scientific Subcommittee of ECR 2016. He was member of the EFRS election committee during the term 2011-2012. Executive Director of the UDIAT Diagnostic Centre in 1992. Since 2006 he has also led the Diagnostic Imaging Department at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and has served as Professor of Radiology at the University of Barcelona.

Early in his career, his research activity focused on abdominal imaging, especially on liver disease. The emphasis has shifted to digital imaging and the development and implementation of IT in diagnostic radiology. Under his leadership, a large R &D team was built at the UDIAT, leading to several patents and products widely used all over Spain. Prof Donoso has given numerous lectures at prestigious universities, congresses, and courses. Altogether he has published over 90 articles and seven book chapters. Prof. Donoso-Bach has served as President of the Spanish Society for Diagnostic Radiology (SERAM), Secretary General of the International Society of Radiology. He is currently the ESR Immidiate Past-President.

David Lurie holds a Chair in Biomedical Physics at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK. He has been a Visiting Scientist at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and was a Visiting International Scholar at Ohio State University. His research contributions are in the technology, techniques and applications of low-field magnetic resonance imaging.

In the 1980s he pioneered the use of dynamic nuclear polarization with MRI, for imaging the distribution of free radicals. His research group are world-leaders in Fast Field-Cycling MRI, and he is coordinator of a nine-member European research consortium, “IDentIFY”, working on this technology, supported by an EU Horizon-2020 grant (2016-19). He has published 70 papers in peer-reviewed journals and 7 book chapters and has given over 70 invited, keynote or plenary lectures at international conferences.

Professor Caruana specializes in diagnostic and interventional radiology and legislative/professional/E&T issues in Medical Physics. He is past-chairperson of the E&T Committee of EFOMP, main author of the role and E&T chapters of the ‘European Guidelines on the Medical Physics Expert’, leader of the Leadership in Medical Physics module of the EUTEMPE-RX project (‘Development of the profession and the challenges for the Medical Physics Expert (D&IR)’ and an acknowledged expert in RP legislation and E&T in Europe.

Mr. H. Delis is working in the IAEA (Dosimetry and Medical Radiation Physics Section, Division of Human Health) as a Medical Physicist in Diagnostic Radiology since 2012. He is a medical physicist with an MSc and a PhD in Medical Physics and an MSc in Quality Assurance. Before joining the IAEA he was working in Greece, as a clinical medical physicist in medical imaging (diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine) for several years and teaching Physics and Medical Physics on a graduate and post-graduate level.

He has more than 30 publication in international journals and 50 presentations in international conferences. His scientific and research interests are in the fields of Imaging Medical Physics, Dosimetry, Mammography, Quality Assurance, Monte Carlo Simulation, E & T in Medical Physics, Radiation Protection.

John Damilakis is full professor and chairman at the Department of Medical Physics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Crete, chairman of the Division of Radiology at the University of Crete and director of the Department of Medical Physics of the University Hospital of Heraklion, Crete, Greece. He is President of the European Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (EFOMP), chairman of the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) Education and Training committee and member of the Board of Directors of IMPCB (International Medical Physics Certification Board).

Prof. Damilakis is coordinator or an active research member of several European and national projects. His publications have been focused on embryo/fetal dosimetry, CT dosimetry and medical radiation protection. Number of publications in Scopus: 195, in PubMed: 182, number of citations 3063, h-index 30 (June 3, 2016). Many of these publications are in leading journals such as Medical Physics, Physics in Medicine and Biology and Radiology. He has received several awards in recognition of his work in the field of Medical Physics.

Manuel Bardiès obtained his Doctorate on radiopharmaceutical dosimetry from Paul Sabatier University (Toulouse III) in November 15, 1991. He has been developing his research in radiopharmaceutical dosimetry within INSERM (National Institute of Health and Medical Research), since 1992, in Nantes then in Toulouse (2011).

Manuel Bardiès was one of the founders of the EANM Dosimetry Committee (member from 2001 to 2013, chair 2009-2011). He is the current chair of EFOMP Science Committee.

Manuel Bardiès authored or participated to more than 60 articles referenced in MedLine (Web Of Science Research ID: L-3136-2014).

The team led by Manuel Bardiès in Toulouse is primarily involved in radiopharmaceutical dosimetry, at various scales (cell, tissue, organ). This requires the ability to assess radiopharmaceutical pharmacokinetics in vivo, through quantitative SPECT or PET small-animal imaging. An important part of research activity is related to Monte-Carlo modelling of radiation transport through biologic structures of interest, in order to give account of energy deposition within tumour targets – or critical non-tumour tissues/organs. The objective is to improve molecular radiotherapy by allowing patient-specific treatments (personalized medicine).

Dr. Lionel Broche is a Research Fellow at the University of Aberdeen, UK, with a background in biomedical physics and engineering. His current work, in the group of David Lurie, focuses on the development of a new imaging technology, Fast Field-Cycling (FFC) MRI, in order to develop hardware, software and methods. He also established strong links with clinicians to develop explorative pilot studies using FFC MRI in various pathologies (cancer, liver fibrosis, neurodegenerative diseases, osteoarthritis, thrombosis and others).

He is one of the initiators of the Horizon2020 project IDentIFY that focuses on the development of tools for FFC MRI in partnership with 8 other European partners, and he is also a co-investigator on an EPSRC-funded project exploring neurodegenerative diseases by FFC MRI at very low field.

Andrew Webb is a Professor in Radiology at the Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands, and director of the C.J.Gorter Center for High Field MRI. He obtained a PhD degree from the University of Cambridge in 1989. He was a postdoc in Radiology at the University of Florida, before becoming assistant, associate and then full professor in 2001 in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois.

He received the Wolfgang Paul research prize from the Humboldt Foundation in 2001, and was a Full Professor in Experimental Physics at the University of Wurzburg. In 2008 he became the first director of the Gorter Center at the LUMC. He has over 270 publications, and has written three educational textbooks on medical imaging and MRI. His research interests include the development of new MRI techniques for clinical applications, with projects in high field imaging and associated hardware.

Jenia Vassileva is medical physicist, former profesor in Medical physics from Bulgaria and former president of the Bulgarian Society of Biomedical Physics and Engineering. She was previously involved in several European research projects in the field of diagnostic radiology and radiation protection in medicine. Author of more than 100 scientific papers, supervisor of more than 20 PhD and MSc students, organizer of two international conferences on radiation protection in medicine, held 2010 and 2014 in Varna, Bulgaria.

She works currently as radiation protection specialist in the Radiation Protection of Patient Unit of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna. She is responsible officer for a number of projects in the field of radiation protection of patients and scientific secreatry of working groups on dose monitoring and DRLs, radiation protection in dental radiology, and other ongoing tasks in the area of diagnostic imaging.

Konstantinos Xenophon Thanassoulas

Is a Radiologic Technologist in the Radiology ( Interventional – Neurointerventional unit) department of Korgialeneio Benakeio – Red Cross Hospital in Athens Greece since 1998.

He has graduated from the School of Medical Radiologic Technologists at Technological Educational Institution of Athens in 1994.

He received his MSC in medical informatics at National and kapodistrian University of Athens in 2012.

He was a member of the board of the Hellenic Scientific Society of Radiologic Technologist for 6 years as organizing secretary.

Cinzia Talamonti was awarded a Master Degree in Physics at the University of Perugia, Italy in 1991. In 1995 she received her PhD discussing a thesis on experimental high energy physics. In 2002 she became specialist in medical physics. 
From 1995 to 1997 Prof. Talamonti was a researcher in physics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, UK. At the end of 1997 she joined the University of Firenze, Italy, as a technical researcher until 2004 and from January 2005 she was physics researcher fellow of the Department of Biomedical Clinical and Experimental Sciences “Mario Serio” of the University of Florence.

Since November 2015 she is Associated Professor at Florence University. She teaches “Physics” and “Medical Physics” at the University of Florence Medicine and Surgery and “ Physics and Astronomy” school respectively.
 The research activity of Prof. Talamonti begun in the field of high energy physics. From 1998 her research interests moved to the medical physics with particular focus on dosimetric characterization of portal imaging systems, development of silicon and CVD diamond dosimeters and medical imaging with photons and charged particles. Prof. Talamonti is the author of over 50 peer-reviewed publications .

Prof S.Tabakov is President of the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP). He started his career at Medical University Plovdiv, Bulgaria, where he habilitated in 1990. Since 1991 he works at King’s College Hospital and King’s College London, UK. His current academic positions include: Director of MSc Clin.Sciences (Medical Physics), MSc Clin.Sciences (Clinical Engineering), and MSc Medical Engineering&Physics. He is also Co-Director of the International College on Medical Physics, ICTP, Trieste.

Prof Tabakov has led 7 international projects, which developed the first e-learning in medical physics, the first Medical Physics Dictionary (translated to 29 languages) and the first e-Encyclopaedia of Medical Physics (www.emitel2.eu). He is also Founding Co-Editor of the IOMP Journal Medical Physics International. Among his awards are EU Leonardo Da Vinci Award and IOMP Harold Johns Medal for Excellence in Teaching and International Education Leadership.

STRIGARI Lidia is a medical physicist working in the Laboratory of Medical Physics and Expert Systems at IRE-IFO since 2003 and she is the Head of the Lab since 2009. She also attended the following masters: Physical basis and technology in the field of adrontherapy and stereotactic radiotherapy, Statistic in biomedical science, Economy and management in Healthcare, and she earn the PhD in Avdanced technologies in biomedicine.

As clinical researcher, she has a strong expertise in both clinical radiotherapy, dosimetry and cancer research fields, as proven by her publication record with more than 112 articles published in indexed/peer-reviewed journals and several book chapters. She is member of the Qualified Expert in Radiation protection of the Italian Ministry of Labour - III degree. From 2004 she is Professor of the Health Physics Post-graduated Specialization School at the University “Tor Vergata” of Rome, Italy.

Research interests in medical imaging, in particular how imaging can be used to facilitate the transfer of laboratory based biological work into clinical practice.

Research interest in ophthalmic imaging, particularly with regard to diabetic retinopathy. My team developed a system for automated screening of retinal images for early signs of diabetic eye disease. This is used routinely in the Scottish Diabetic Retinal Screening Service.

Received the Queen's Anniversary Prize 2000 for Higher and Further Education, in recognition of the Department of Biomedical Physics and Bioengineering’s "Pre-eminence in medical imaging technology for over 30 years".

Appointed as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to healthcare science.

Dr. Solveig Schulz studied medicine in Giessen (Germany), Albuquerque (NM, USA) and Toronto (ON, Canada) and graduated in 2007. She wrote her doctoral thesis on Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in childhood at the NHL-BFM Study Center in Germany. She held two scholarships. In 2009 she got ECFMG certified.

She completed her residency in Radiation Oncology in a community hospital in Hessen, at the University of Münster (Departments of Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Oncology) as well as in a private practice in Niedersachsen (Germany) and gained a wide exposure to medical oncology in addition to full range of radiation oncology subsites.

In 2014 Dr. Schulz passed the ESMO examination, which certifies an excellent knowledge in the field of Medical Oncology. She works now as a Senior Radiation Oncologist at the West German Proton Therapy Centre in Essen with special clinical and research interest in adult and pediatric brain tumors, lymphomas and sarcomas.

Paolo Russo (born 1958, graduated in Physics in 1981) is a Full Professor of Medical Physics at Federico II University (Naples, Italy). His research activity is in the field of Medical Physics, with most work in the area of development of semiconductor imaging detectors for digital mammography, digital autoradiography, X-ray and gamma-ray small animal imaging, X-ray CT dedicated to the breast.

He coordinated national and local projects in the technologies of Medical Imaging within the activity of the Italian Nuclear Physics Institute (INFN). He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Physica Medica - European Journal of Medical Physics since 2013. He is in the Board of Directors of the International Medical Physics Certification Board (IMPCB) and member of the Publication Committee of the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP). He is the author of over 120 papers in peer reviewed scientific journals and scientific book chapters.

Dr. Papanikolaou is the chief of the department of medical physics and a professor of radiation oncology and radiology at the Univ of Texas HSC San Antonio. He has been invited to lecture to several national and international meetings and he serves as an associate editor for the journals of Medical Physics and the Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics.

He has authored and co-authored of over five hundred peer reviewed journal papers and abstracts in the area of radiation oncology and medical physics and he is the recipient of several research grants in the area of dose optimization and radiotherapy modeling.

Dr Papanikolaou has been named a fellow of both the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and the American College of Medical Physics.

His clinical and research interests include, intensity modulated and image guided radiotherapy, stereotactic and adaptive radiotherapy and radiobiological modeling of radiation treatments.

Panagiotis Papadimitroulas was born in 1985 in Larisa. He received his Diploma in Applied Mathematical and Physical Sciences from the NTUA in 2009 and his Master in Medical Physics from the University of Patras in 2011. He holds a PhD on the “Evaluation of diagnostic, therapeutic and dosimetric applications in nuclear medicine, with the development of computational models and the use of Monte Carlo simulations” from the University of Patras (2015).

His research interests are focused on the field of Monte Carlo simulations on persnonalized medicine using anthropomorphic computational models and on dosimetric applications for clinical & pre-clinical protocols. He authored 1 book chapter, 8 journal publications and over 40 announcements in international and national conferences. He has also participated in 1 FP7, 1 Bilateral, 1 COST action, 2 Horizon-2020 and 5 national projects. The last 3 years Panagiotis Papadimitroulas is the co-founder and Project Director of BET Solutions (www.betsolutions.gr).

Michalis Mazonakis was born in Heraklion, Crete, Creece in 1968. He received the BSc in Physics from the University of Crete in 1990. He obtained his M.Sc. in Medical Physics from the University of Surrey, UK in 1991 and his Ph.D. from the University of Crete in 2001. He was a scientific associate in the Medical School of the University of Crete from 1995 to 1996. He joined the Medical Physics Department of the University Hospital of Heraklion in 1997.

He presently serves as Assistant Professor in Medical Physics at the University of Crete, Greece. He is author and co-author in more than 55 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has participated in more than 90 presentations in domestic and international congresses. His research interests include dosimetry in radiotherapy, quantification of the radiogenic risks attributable to external-beam radiation therapy and development of semi-automatic methods for organ volume estimations from cross-sectional images.

Prof. George Loudos is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at TEI Athens. His research interests are focused on Molecular Imaging using Nuclear Medicine Techniques, Medical Instrumentation and use of advanced simulations for optimization of diagnostic and therapeutic protocols. He has participated as cordinator and group leader in 10 EU projects, as well as a National Excellence grant and several smaller projects and has attracted ~3M€ of funding.

He has published more than 100 articles in international journals, has more than 200 publications in conference proceedings and ~750 citations. He has given 35 invited lectures and holds one patent. He strongly supports interdisciplinary cooperation and education in the field of nanomedicine and molecular imaging and for this reason he has been organizer of many international conferences, workshops and training schools.

Mannudeep K. Kalra, MD is an attending radiologist in Divisions of Thoracic and Cardiac Imaging of Massachusetts General Hospital and Associate Professor of Radiology with the Harvard Medical School. He also serves as the Director for MGH Webster Center for Advanced Research and Education in Radiation.

He has authored over 250 original research articles, book chapters, abstracts and review articles with primary focus on CT radiation dose optimization and CT technology assessment. He has delivered over 100 national and international lectures and workshops on various aspects of CT technology and radiation dose. His work on CT radiation dose optimization has earned several awards and prizes at national and international radiology meetings.

I have joined Hamad Medical Corporation, in Doha, Qatar, in 2012 and working till to day. More than 18 years worked in the department of Biomedical Physics, King Faisal Specialist Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I have a MSc in Medical Physics, from the Radiation Physics Department, University of Stockholm (Karolinska Institute), Sweden. (2006), and I am Certified as a Qualified Medical Physicist Professional (A Swedish license to practice).

Mr. Iqeilan has long experience in the field of diagnostic radiology, duties including: radiation protection, radiation dosimetry and physics of medical imaging. Commissioning, acceptance and routine QC testing of x-ray equipment, Internal teaching of staff in theoretical and practical radiation protection of staff and patients, Participate in optimization studies. Scientific support to users of x-ray equipment, Procurement of new equipment. Consultant on radiation safety standards and measurements, having reviewed many safety manuals and draft standards.

Søren Holm (born 1953), M.Sc., Ph.D., MPE, is Senior Physicist at Department of Clinical Physiology, Nuclear Medicine and PET, University Hospital Copenhagen (Rigshospitalet) and the department’s responsible Medical Physics Expert according to Danish legislation on radiation protection. His current fields of interest are the development, optimization and pitfalls of hybrid scanning methods (SPECT/CT, PET/CT, and PET/MR), but he is also actively involved in radionuclide therapy (Lu-177, Y-90, and Ra-223) regarding dosimetry as well as protection.

He has coauthored more than 100 peer-reviewed papers. He is teaching technologists, medical doctors, medical physicists and also students in medical engineering at a regular basis. He recently left the position as president of the Danish Society for Medical Physics, but continue to be involved in its European collaborations as a delegate to EFOMP. In EANM, he is a member of the Physics Committee and involved in the formation of a new Radiation Protection Committee.

Associate Professor of Medical and Radiation Physics in Medical School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). He is working in the 2nd Department of Radiology at "Attikon" University Hospital. He is delivering clinical work into the Hospital being Radiation Protection Supervisor for all Radiological units and units of Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine. He is teaching at Medical and Nurse Schools, Radiation Protection and Medical Imaging with x-rays.

He is also teaching at four Postgraduate Programs. His research focuses on patient and personnel x-ray dosimetry and quantification of the risk resulting from this, in imaging of the heart and blood vessels and applications of nanomedicine in imaging. He has published more than 80 original papers in international scientific journals, which have been received more than 1500 citations to international articles and books. He is author of three chapters in scientific books. He has presented more than 100 scientific congress announcements and has given more than 40 invited scientific congress lectures.

Dr Catharine Clark is a Consultant Clinical Scientist at the Royal Surrey County Hospital and a Principal Research Scientist at the National Physical Laboratory in the UK. She also holds a visiting senior lecturer position at the University of Surrey.

Catharine is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) and a member of the ESTRO physics committee. Her research interests lie in radiotherapy dosimetry and she has recently led several national dosimetry audits, including for rotational IMRT, lung SABR and intra-cranial SRS.

In 1997 I got a permanent position as Medical Physics Expert in Nuclear Medicine Division. I am involved mainly in patient dosimetry in nuclear medicine radiation therapy with 90Y microspheres (450 planned patients), and with all the other current agents.

Dr. Carlo Cavedon graduated in Physics in 1992 from Padova University – Italy – where his research field was experimental Nuclear Physics, and specialized in Medical Physics cum laude at University of Milano in 1996.

He served as Medical Physicist in Vicenza Hospital – Italy - since 1997, where he researched on Radiosurgery, Dosimetry, Monte Carlo simulation, and on imaging for radiation treatment planning and neurosurgery, with a special interest in 3D angiographic techniques aimed at targeting vascular malformations.

He has been nominated Director of the Medical Physics department of Verona University Hospital – Italy – in March 2009. His responsibilities include professional and academic aspects of Medical Physics as applied to Radiology, Radiotherapy, Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Protection. His current research interests are quantitative and functional techniques in Radiology, 3D angiography, and multimodality imaging for treatment planning.

Dr. Cavedon is a full member of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) and the Italian Association of Medical Physics (AIFM). He holds several teaching appointments in Italian medical physics courses. He has been serving as Associate Editor in the Editorial Board of the Medical Physics journal since January 2005 and is now a Senior Associate Editor. He is a member of the scientific committee of the Italian Association of Medical Physics since 2010, being appointed its Chair in 2016. Dr. Cavedon is the author or co-author of more than 50 scientific publications in extenso and more than 100 abstracts presented at international Medical Physics conferences.

Dr Tsapaki is leading the Medical Physics Department of Konstantopoulio General Hospital in Athens, Greece. She has more than 25 years experience in Medical Physics and Radiation Protection with more than 100 publications, in national/international journals as well as international conference proceedings and more than 150 presentations and posters. She has participated in a number of European and IAEA Research Projects.

She acted as Secretary General of the Hellenic Association of Medical Physics (HAMP) and is the President of HAMP for the 3rd term. She represents HAMP at the Ministry Expert Group for Ionizing Radiation. She is currently the Chair of EFOMP Projects Committee and was the Chair of EFOMP Communications and Publications Committee for 2012-2014. She is also the SG of IOMP and previously the editor of the IOMP eMPW. She is an IAEA expert sent in several missions around the world mainly focused in Eastern Europe and Africa.

Uulke van der Heide received his training as medical physicist at the department of radiation oncology of the University Medical Center in Utrecht, the Netherlands and worked there as a medical physicist until 2011. He now works as a medical physicist and group leader at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He holds a chair as professor of imaging technology in radiation oncology at the Leiden University. He participates as a teacher on MRI for radiotherapy in several courses of the ESTRO school.

His research group works on the improvement of target definition in radiotherapy by application of MRI and the development and validation of quantitative imaging methods for tumor characterization for radiotherapy dose painting. He further leads the MR-guided radiotherapy program at the Netherlands Cancer Institute.

Solomou Georgia received her PhD degree in medical physics in 2015 from the University of Crete, Greece. From 2012 to 2015 she had been participated as a Medical Physicist in the research project entitled Conceptus Radiation Doses and Risks from Imaging with Ionizing Radiation (CONCERT) which is funded by European Union (ESPA 2007-2013). From 2011 to 2012 she had been a Medical Physicist with the Medical Physics Department of the University Hospital of Heraklion, Crete, Greece.

She has published several articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and conference proceedings. She has served as a external assistant in module 11 course of the EUTEMPE-RX project on education and training for medical physics experts in diagnostic and interventional radiology. She is a member of the Greek Association of Medical Physicists (GAMP).

I am a professional Medical Physicist and I currently work for the Medical Physics Department of Araba University Hospital in the beautiful city of Vitoria, in the Basque Country, in the north of Spain. I have a Physics Degree from the University of Granada, and I obtained my professional license as a Medical Physicist after a three year residence at the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital in Santander.

Since 2010 I have worked in the field of radiation therapy and I have carried out research in nuclear medicine, that has recently culminated in a patent for a device to conduct biopsies, guided only by positron emission tomography image.

Since 2004, Antonios Papadakis has been a medical physicist and radiation protection officer with the Medical Physics Department of the University Hospital of Heraklion, Crete Greece. He received the PhD degree in medical physics in 2003 from the University of Patras, Greece. From 2003 to 2004 he had been a research fellow with the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA, USA.

He has launched and participated as an investigator in numerous research projects in the fields of patient and occupational radiation protection in diagnostic radiology and three dimensional radiotherapy dosimetry. He has published several articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and conference proceedings. He has served as a teacher in module 11 course of the EUTEMPE-RX project on education and training for medical physics experts in diagnostic and interventional radiology.

Massimilano Pacilio has a Master's Degree (second level Italian degree) in Physics, and a Specialization in Medical Physics (Medical Physics Post-graduate School), from "Sapienza" University of Rome. He was a contract researcher in the period 1998-2002, mainly at the Italian National Institute of Health. He was involved in several research projects of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics, on clinical dosimetry of ionising radiation.

Since 2002, he works as a medical physicist in public hospitals in Italy, working mainly in applied physics in nuclear medicine and molecular radiotherapy in the last 10 years. Luigi Raffaele is a Medical Physicist. From 1997 he is Chief Physicist of the Department of Medical Physics at the Faculty Hospital of University of Catania, especially concerned in dosimetry and quality control of megavoltage photon and electron beams used in external radiotherapy. He is from 1998 Associated Researcher of INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare) in the field of proton dosimetry and treatment planning in proton therapy and from 2003 responsible of the Dosimetry Team of the Catana INFN protontherapy facility for the treatment of the uveal melanoma (350 patients treated up till now). .

He is teacher at the special service schools of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Catania in the subjects “Clinical Dosimetry”. From 2006 he is member he of the dosimetry team of the CNAO (Comitato Nazionale Adroterapia Oncologica), devoted to the dosimetry of scanning proton and carbon ion beams for the new active heavy ion beam Italian facility. He is author of about 100 papers in journals of Medical Physics (Physica Medica, Tumori, Medical Physics, Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Nuclear Physics, IJROBP, IEEE Transaction in Nuclear Physics, Radiation Protection Dosimetry), From 2013 to 2015 he has represented AIFM (Associazione Italiana di Fisica Medica) at ESTRO.

Thomas G. Maris was born in Heraklion/Crete, Greece in 1963. He has a 28yrs clinical experience working as a Medical Physicist in two University Hospitals [Areteion/Athens/Greece(10yrs), Heraklion/Crete/Greece(18yrs)]. He was elected assistant professor (2003) and associate professor (2014) of Medical Physics at the University of Crete. He is author/co-author in 96 scientific papers, all published in peer-review journals. He has more than 1500 non-self scientific citations (h-index:23).

He has participated as an invited speaker in more than 40 congresses/seminars and as an author/co-author in more than 190 presentations in national/international congresses. He is a member of the executive board of the Hellenic Association of Medical Physicists (HAMP) since 2000 (Chairman for the yrs 2010-2012). He is the greek delegate for the European Federation of Medical Physics (EFOMP) since 2008. He is a member of the European-Society-of-Radiology (ESR) and the European Society-of-Magnetic-Resonance-in-Medicine-and-Biology (ESMRMB).

Paweł Franciszek Kukołowicz was born in Łódź, Poland in 1957. Graduated from the Faculty of Physics at the Warsaw University. PhD in medical physics. Medical physics expert according to Polish legislation. Lecturer at the Physics Faculty of the Warsaw University. Currently head of the Medical Physics Department and professor at Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center and Institute of Oncology in Warsaw.

President of Polish Society of Medical Physics and editor-in-chief of the Polish Journal of Medical Physics and Engineering. Author of more than 40 papers published in peer-review journals. Author of the book “Characteristics of therapeutic photon and electron beams” (in Polish). Member of Ministry of the Polish Board for Examination in medical physics. Member of ESTRO and AAPM.

Married, 4 children and 6 grandchildren. Member of the International Catholic Movement for Christian Married Couples, Equipes Notre-Dame. Marathon runner.

Ms Agnieszka Kuchcinska has more than 8 years of experience in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at the SHEDAR Testing Laboratory in Poland, where she has implemented the ISO 17025 international standard for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories and cooperated with over 100 healthcare centers, being responsible for the QC testing of over 250 different devices spanning all X-ray imaging modalities. She is an expert in regulatory measurements, traceability, QC methodology development & accreditation and risk management in D&IR. Ms Kuchcinska’s interests include radiobiology and the effects of ionizing radiation on human health, topics on which she has presented at various national congresses.

She is one of only two people who participated in all twelve modules of the EUTEMPE-RX project to achieve Medical Physics Expert status in D&IR and reported her experience during the EUTEMPE-RX mid-term workshop in Sofia (2015).

I am a medical physicist in the Radiology Department focusing on the safe application of MRI. This includes quality control of the 1.5T, 3.0T, and 7.0T scanners in our department, handling safety related questions (both patient care and research), and support clinical and scientific research on all the MRI scanners. My own research line is on developing sodium-MRI on the 7.0T scanner for the detection of early degeneration of articular cartilage

Prof. Giovanni Borasi developed his career at the Hospital of Cà Granda – Niguarda in Milano and then at S. Maria Hospital in Reggio Emilia, (IT) where he first became Director of the Medical Physics Service and then of the Science and Technology Department, including the Services of Medical Physics, Information Technology and Medical Devices.

His interests and research covered many aspects of Medical Physics. After retiring in 2009, he became a consultant of the University of Milano – Bicocca and he dedicated himself principally to High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU or FUS).

In this field he is currently studying the synergistic interaction between High Intensity Focused Ultrasound and Ionizing Radiation with a view to developing a totally new tumor therapy. He published more than 120 papers in peer-reviewed journals. He holds 3 European patents and he has a patent pending on the new combined LINAC-HIFU device. Ioannis Seimenis holds a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Athens, an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Medical Physics from the University of Aberdeen. He is a medical physicist board-certified in both ionising and non-ionising radiation physics. He held a series of posts in the medical industry and in the private healthcare sector followed by research and academic posts. He is currently Professor of Medical Physics and Head of the Medical Physics Laboratory in the Department of Medicine at the Democritus University of Thrace and consultant physicist at the Evros University Hospital.

His research interests lie in the fields of MRI physics and clinical applications, CT technology and dosimetry, experimental dosimetry in radiotherapy applications and medical image analysis. He has co-authored 85 peer-reviewed publications and 120 abstracts in international conference proceedings, whilst he has participated in 22 competitive research projects funded by research promoting bodies.

Carmelo Marino is Head of Medical Physics Department at Humanitas C.C.O. in Catania. He has high experience in commissioning of radiotherapy devices and PET/CT facilities; his interests and research covers many aspects of radiotherapy treatments, particularly related to IMRT/VMAT- SRS/SBRT techniques.

He is tutor for School of Medical Physics at University of Catania and he follows research projects in collaboration with University of Catania and Messina. He is member of the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) and of the Italian Association of Medical Physics (AIFM). He is teacher for many appointments in National and International medical physics meetings and he is author or co-author of several publications related to Medical Physics and Radiotherapy.

Lars G. Hanson is Senior Scientist at the Danish Research Center for Magnetic Resonance (DRCMR) at Copenhagen University Hospital Hvidovre, and Associate Professor at the Center for Magnetic Resonance at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) that is hosting the HYPERMAG Centre focused on hyperpolarization methods and applications.

Dr. Hanson's research focus is acquisition methodology and the accompanying analysis for Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy (MRI/MRS/MRSI). This includes motion tracking and motion correction during data acquisition, fast spectroscopic imaging methods for hydrogen and carbon, and measurement of non-MR signals during data acquisision, e.g., signals from field sensors. Dr. Hanson has also authored widely used educational software (the Bloch Simulator, and the CompassMR app and web page), and has several publications addressing the often misunderstood relation between classical and quantum MR descriptions.

Lars G. Hanson was educated as a physicist at the University of Copenhagen, and at the Max Planck Insitute for Quantum Optics, Garching, Germany. He received a PhD degree on fast spectroscopic MR imaging in year 2000 from the University of Copenhagen for studies conducted at the DRCMR and the Lucas Centre, Stanford University, California.

Manivannan obtained his Doctorate in Ophthalmic Imaging in 1993 from University of Aberdeen. He has developed a patented Colour Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope for scanning human and animal eyes. His team has pioneered the technique of leukocyte tracking in mouse eyes.

As the course co-ordinator for the MSc in Medical Physics, and as a lecturer for 22 years, Manivannan has taught physics in ophthalmology, safety of medical lasers and non-ionising radiation.

Manivannan has supervised many Masters, PhD and MD students. He has authored 35 peer reviewed articles and has presented over 50 talks at international conferences. He has contributed two book chapters tilted “Diagnostic applications of lasers” and “Instrumentation for Fluorescein Angiography and Indocyanine Angiography”.

As an accredited Laser Protection Advisor, he has trained a number of nurses, surgeons and academic staff in laser safety. He is a major contributor of the new MHRA guidelines (UK, 2015) on laser safety.

Manivannan is the current Treasurer of EFOMP. He has taken the roles as IPEM’s Vice President International and member of various scientific committees.

Mr Jonathan Loui Portelli qualified with a BSc (Hons) Radiography at the University of Malta in 2004, following which he worked as a diagnostic radiographer in public and private hospitals in Malta. In 2009, Mr Portelli pursued his interest in research and obtained an MSc in Health and Social Care Research at the University of Sheffield, UK. A year later, Mr Portelli was appointed as an assistant lecturer within the Department of Radiography at the University of Malta, whereby he is responsible for lecturing, assessments, and research supervision in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuous professional development programmes and courses.

Mr Portelli shares a specific interest in diagnostic and paediatric radiography, radiation protection, professional/legal issues, and research. He is currently reading for a PhD at University College Dublin, Ireland, where he is conducting a multi-phased study to investigate aspects relating to the imaging of paediatric patients, specifically radiation dose awareness, benefit-risk communication and consent practices among referrers and practitioners in Malta.

Mr Portelli is the past president of the Maltese Society of Medical Radiographers (SRM Malta), serving in this role between 2009 and 2015.
